Bridgetown Forge is happy to announce the smithing classes available with current schedules

BASIC SMITHING CLASS
June 7-8, 2014 (Sat-Sun),  9 AM — 4 PM. The class is designed to introduce a beginner smith to the fundamentals of smithing techniques: forging the stock down, upsetting, punching, twisting, cutting, and bending, and also basic heat-treatment. We will make a wide variety of objects, starting with the simplest forms and building on skills acquired to create more complex objects. The students are introduced to Hofi’s ergonomic forging technique, which allows for very fast, accurate forging with less effort and strain on the body. We will learn , among other things, how to forge a leaf, a square-cut nail, a cold chisel, a screw driver, a wall hook, and a fire poker.
Each student has his/her own anvil and a complete set of tools, constant access to a forge, and unlimited stock.
The price of the class is $350, which includes all materials and safety equipment.
If interested, please mail a deposit check of $150 to the following address: 212 SE 79th ave., Portland, OR, 97215.  The remainder of the class fee is due on first day of class.

TOOL-MAKING CLASS
July 5-6, 2014, Sat-Sun, 9AM –4:30 PM.: One of the advantages of the smithing craft, and  also one of its joys is the ability to make tools both for yourself and other craftspeople.  We will progress from the simpler to the more complex, learning how to make a center-punch, a chisel, a screw-driver, a crowbar, a hammer and smith’s tongs.  In the process, we will learn the various crucial smithing techniques such as drawing down, upsetting, punching, twisting and hot-cutting. We will also anneal, harden, and temper our tools. The skills and principles learned can be used to make a variety of tools and implements, both beautiful and useful. There are no pre-requisites. All the tools made by the students are theirs to take home.  The fee is $360, which includes all materials and safety equipment. The class is limited to 7 students.
If interested, please let me know. To reserve a spot, please send a check for $100 to the following address: 212 SE 79th ave, Portland, OR 97215. The remainder is due on first day of class.
